What Outpatient Rehab Actually Is
Knowing what to expect in outpatient rehab makes taking the initial step toward recovery much clearer. What is outpatient rehab? It is structured clinical treatment that you attend on a scheduled basis while continuing to live your daily life, rather than moving into a residential facility.
Our continuum of care includes three distinct outpatient levels: a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for full daytime clinical sessions, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for structured care built around work, and traditional outpatient treatment (OP) for long-term support. Living off-site is the deliberate design of outpatient treatment, allowing adult men to rebuild independent daily routines around their ongoing recovery work. Many men start directly at PHP or IOP without having attended detox or residential rehab.
What Actually Happens in a Session
When asking what happens in an IOP session or what PHP treatment is, you should know that most of your time is spent in clinician-led group therapy and individual counseling. Having a licensed clinician lead the room distinguishes these sessions from peer-led support circles, creating a structured, non-judgmental environment. You won’t be expected to share everything on your first day in outpatient rehab. Most men ease in, and participation tends to build as the room becomes familiar.
Our clinical curriculum integrates evidence-based therapeutic methods tailored to help men build practical coping mechanisms:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Restructures negative thought patterns and behavioral triggers.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Teaches practical distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills.
- Trauma-Informed Care: Addresses underlying psychological wounds within a secure therapeutic environment.
- Medication-Assisted Treatment: Manages persistent physical cravings under licensed medical oversight.
- Dual Diagnosis Care: Treats co-occurring conditions like anxiety and depression.
Fitting Treatment Around a Job
A primary concern for working professionals is asking, “Can I work during rehab?” When evaluating what to expect from an intensive outpatient program, please know that clients can still maintain employment while receiving care. PHP requires a greater daytime commitment, whereas IOP and standard outpatient care offer flexible schedules built around work duties. The specific shape of your week is determined directly with our clinical team based on your individual needs.
Being in treatment is private healthcare information, and disclosure to an employer is not automatic. For specific questions regarding job protection, medical leave, or workplace disclosures, consulting an employment attorney or human resources representative is recommended. Our internally managed sober living residences offer added daily structure for men balancing career responsibilities.
Outpatient care at The Grove is a continuum. Most men move between these levels as they stabilize, all within one clinical team.
Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
Full-day clinical treatment while you return home or to sober living each evening.
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Structured therapy multiple days per week, scheduled around work, school, or family duties.
Outpatient Treatment
Lower-intensity weekly care focused on long-term stability and aftercare planning.
Sober Living
Substance-free housing for men in Santa Ana with added daily structure during treatment.
Starting Rehab When You Have Not Stopped Yet
Many men entering outpatient care have not completely stopped consuming substances yet, which serves as a normal starting point for a clinical assessment. The initial evaluation identifies what substances are present and determines an appropriate level of care.
Stopping heavy alcohol or benzodiazepine consumption abruptly can trigger severe withdrawal seizures and prove fatal without direct medical supervision. The Grove Recovery Community does not provide medical detox services on-site and will clearly inform you if medical withdrawal management is required prior to starting outpatient care. If you or someone you know is facing severe withdrawal symptoms, call 911 immediately. Likewise, if you are experiencing an emotional crisis, help is available through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.
What Happens If You Use During Treatment
Experiencing a setback during outpatient care is relatively common and is typically handled as a clinical learning opportunity rather than automatic grounds for program dismissal. Because clients return home each evening, real-world environmental stressors remain present.
Informing your clinical team about substance use allows clinicians to adjust your treatment plan to address missing coping skills. Hiding substance use often creates anxiety that disrupts therapeutic progress, whereas open communication ensures your recovery plan remains effective.

FAQs About Outpatient Rehab
Can I keep working during outpatient rehab?
Yes, maintaining your employment or educational duties is a primary feature of intensive outpatient programs. The exact schedule is set directly with your clinical team to fit around your work commitments.
What happens in a typical session?
Most session time is dedicated to clinician-led group therapy and individual counseling focused on practical coping skills. You will not be forced to speak on your first day, as participation builds naturally as you get comfortable.
Do I have to be sober before I start?
No, many men have not stopped using substances when they make their initial call. Our clinical assessment determines your starting level of care, though heavy alcohol or benzodiazepine use requires medical detox first; for immediate crisis support, call or text 988.
What happens if I drink or use during treatment?
Tell your clinical team. Use during treatment is something they’ll work through with you, and being honest gives them what they need to adjust your plan and address what triggered it.
Will my employer find out?
Your participation in treatment is protected health information, and disclosure to an employer is not automatic. For specific guidance regarding job security or medical leave disclosures, speak with an employment lawyer or HR representative.
Do I have to do a 12-step program?
No, our clinical program welcomes all recovery frameworks, including 12-Step groups, SMART Recovery, or non-traditional approaches. Our clinicians support whatever path helps you achieve long-term stability.
